Thornton and Waller

Dorothy Murray Thornton became the bride of Wendell Blake Waller in a ceremony on Saturday, April 21, in Kona, Hawaii. The Rev. Richard Tardiff performed the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of John Calvin Thornton and Sally Murray Lockett. Parents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Curtis Waller. After a honeymoon at the Manua Kea in Kona, the couple resides in this city.

Engagement

Burger and Bastos

The engagement of Kristen Lee Burger and Bernardo Cedano Bastos is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Burger. Parents of the future bridegroom are Nancy Bastos and Bernardo Cedano of Colombia, South America. The wedding is planned for Saturday, June 16, at a private residence. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Margueritte Shacklette of Elizabethtown, Ky., and the late Jimmie Lee Shacklette. Miss Burger is a graduate of Notre Dame High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in stage management from the University of Miami. She is pursuing a master’s degree in early childhood education and special education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is a member of Calvary Chapel. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Bernardo Cedano Betez, the late Herminda Sabogal and Graciela Bastos. Mr. Bastos is a graduate of Braulio Gonzalez High School in Yopal, Col. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, cum laude, and is pursuing a master’s degree in electrical engineering at UTC. He is a member of Calvary Chapel.

Garcia and Hayes

The engagement of Arielle Maree Garcia and Michael Anthony Hayes Jr. is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Jose L. Garcia and Cynthia Sims Garcia of Marietta, Ga. Parents of the future bridegroom are Michael and Angela Hayes Sr. The wedding is planned for Saturday, July 14, in Alumni Chapel at Baylor School. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Marlin and Louise Sims and Judith Ortiz of Orlando, Fla. Miss Garcia received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Tennessee Technological University. She is a teacher at Normal Park Museum Magnet School. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Diciree Wheeler, the late Theodore Wheeler Jr., the late Ruby Harris and the late Frank Hayes Sr. Mr. Hayes received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee Technological University, where he was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He is a systems engineer at TVA.

McElvain and Brown

The engagement of April Patrice McElvain and Correy Jermaine Brown is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David R. McElvain Jr. Parents of the future bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Anthony D. Brown Sr. The wedding is planned for Saturday, July 21, at Orchard Knob Baptist Church. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Juanita Haywood, the late Mr. and Mrs. David McElvain Sr., and the late V.J. Jackson Miss McElvain received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in special education from Tennessee State University. She is a special education teacher for Williamson County Schools. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Gladys Bomar, the late William Robert Bomar, the late Willie Lee Davidson and the late William Brown. Mr. Brown received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received a master’s degree in public administration and a juris doctorate from the University of Tennessee Law School. He is a student support counselor at Temple University.

The engagement of Kimberley Ann Riffey and Jon Tyler Oaks is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Danny and Paula Riffey of Corryton, Tenn. Parents of the future bridegroom are Chris and Tracy Oaks of Jasper, Tenn. The wedding is planned for Friday, June 29, at Signal Mountain Church of God youth campground. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Martha Smith, the late Paul Buckner, Betty Riffey and the late Joe Riffey, all of Knoxville. Miss Riffey graduated from Gibbs High School in Corryton, and Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology. She is employed by Super Cuts in Halls, Tenn., and is a member of New Harvest Church of God in Knoxville. The future bridegroom is the grandson of the Rev. Charles and Glenda Oaks of South Pittsburg, Tenn., and the late Robert and Lillie Stephens. Mr. Oaks is a graduate of Richard Hardy Memorial School. He is employed by A1 Wilson Tree & Lawn Service in Knoxville, and is a member of New Harvest Church of God.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Bankston of Rossville and Molly White of Jackson, Ky. Miss Bankston is a graduate of Gordon Lee High School. She is pursuing a career in cosmetology at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. She is a life group leader in student ministries at Oakwood Baptist Church. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Windell Wooten, the Rev. and Mrs. Frank Kelly and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Crabtree, all of Chickamauga. Mr.Wooten is a graduate of Gordon Lee High School. He received an associate’s degree in general studies and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Dalton State College. He is employed by Costco and is a worship leader in student ministries at Oakwood Baptist Church.

The engagement of Tristan Lane Bennett and William Derrick Bailey is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Denise Lane Bennett of Chickamauga, Ga., and the late John Ray Bennett. The future bridegroom is the son of Teresa Ann Bailey of Ringgold, Ga., and William Edward Bailey. The wedding is planned for Friday, Oct. 12, on Kauai Island in Hawaii. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Vivian Lane of Rock Spring, Ga., the late Dennis C. Lane, and the late Mr. and Mrs. John R. Bennett. Miss Bennett is a graduate of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and master’s degrees in education and educational specialist in school psychology from Georgia State University. She is a psychologist for Brevard Public School District in Florida. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Eliza Burke. Mr. Bailey is a graduate of McCallie School. He received a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He is an engineer for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The engagement of Vamela Ann Smallwood and Paul Thomas Hookey is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Glenda Smallwood of Ringgold, Ga., and the late William Earl Smallwood. Mr. Hookey is also pursuing a degree in criminology at Chattanooga State. He is a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

The engagement of Lauren Broadstone and Sloan Davis-Christopher Marsh is announced today. The future bride is the daughter of Paul and Pam Broadstone. Miss Broadstone is a graduate of Girls Preparatory School. She graduated cum laude, from Clemson University with a degree in animal and veterinary sciences. She is a hunter/jumper barn manager in Bluffton, S.C., and is a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church. The future bridegroom is the grandson of Joan Marsh of Tacoma, Wash., the late Slater Marsh and the late Richard and Polly Pierle. Mr. Marsh is a member of the U.S. Armed Forces.
