Sports/Preps: Baseball teams jockey for position

Filed by Ward Gossett

A little more than three weeks into the season and it looks like crunch time already as teams jockey for postseason position.

East Ridge plays at Chattanooga Christian and Hixson meets Notre Dame at Engel Stadium today in crucial 6-AA matchups. East Ridge is the surprising leader after winning two games over Hixson. CCS and Notre Dame split their games.

But its the same in 5-AAA and 5-AA, where Cleveland and Bradley are unbeaten after two games each and the early leaders. Walker Valley and McMinn County are tied for third with 1-1 district records.

Looking back at the Lookouts Classic tournament, Soddy-Daisy catcher/pitcher Jared Dobbs had a career weekend. He hit six home runs, including a six-RBI effort Saturday night in an MVP-type effort.

Without patronizing, Hixson coach Brian Bray is to be commended, not only for having a playable field, but for agreeing to play a semifinal Sunday when the team from Berea, Ohio, had to skip out Sunday morning to get back home. Berea was scheduled to be one of the Classics semifinal competitors but was looking at a 9 1/2-hour bus trip.

Meanwhile, Ooltewah catcher Tim Markum will be OK after getting hit in the left temple Sunday during a game in Murfreesboro Riverdales tournament. It may be at least a week before he plays, although he was pronounced OK by doctors at a Smyrna hospital.

Ooltewah lost two games in the tournament the Owls first losses this season but Markums status was on the mind of coach Jon Massey.

They say hes OK to play, but that was a scary moment, Massey said. We want to make sure hes healthy. Hes going to have to get cleared by doctors here before we let him play again.

Ooltewah plays games against 6-AAA rival Central today and Tuesday.
