Where can you go in Chattanooga to find authentic Mexican food?
I recently had a great lunch at La Rulleta on 23rd Street. They had the most remarkable guacamole Ive ever had. And the shrimp fajita was great. The menu included a range of other items not found in most Mexican eateries .... ceviche being among them with shrimp, calamari and octopus. And man, was it ever good.
The restaurant was sparkling clean and bright with lots of space. But, its in a part of town not now associated with fine dining.
But then I remember what folks said about Southside Grill when it first opened on Cowart Street. People were wondering what Alice Lupton and Diana Van Cleave were thinking, opening a nice restaurant apart from the usual dining districts. There was even a promise of added security after dark and policemen on horseback patrolling the parking lots and streets around the restaurant.
Now look at it today. A decade later, the Southside is an example of urban blight turned urban beauty. Peoples misconceptions about the district were nullified. Perhaps one day people will say the same thing about 23rd Street.
