Thursday was the qualifying deadline for many Aug. 3 races, including the 31st state House District race, where eight Republicans and one Democrat are running to fill an open seat.

James Cobb and George Thacker, of Spring City, Tenn.; Randy Fairbanks and Christian Lanier, of Soddy-Daisy; Jeff Lewis, John McDougal and David Norton, of Hixson; and Ed Warren, of Sale Creek; are running in the Aug. 3 GOP primary in the 31st House District, which includes part of northern Hamilton County and all of Rhea County.

On the same day, J. Glenn Moseley, of Graysville, Tenn., is running in the 31st District Democratic primary.

Hamilton County Republican Party Chairman Bobby Wood said he is taking a poll in the Hamilton County portion of the 31st District to determine the popularity of the GOP candidates. He said he would like to see the list of Republicans narrowed to two or three candidates.

I think we actually have more candidates than we foresaw that we would have, he said.

Mr. Wood said he plans to meet with 31st District Republican candidates on Monday to discuss poll results. Next Thursday is the deadline to withdraw from these races, according to the State Election Commission.
