Schools win lawsuit over autistic student

By Beverly A. Carroll

Staff Writer

A U.S. District Federal Court judge this week ruled in favor of Hamilton County Schools in the latest round of hearings in a special education lawsuit.

U.S. District Judge R. Allan Edgar held that the county school system provided the appropriate education for 12 year-old Zachary Deal, who is autistic. His parents sued the district after schools officials refused to provide a specific program that the parents believed was successful.

This court concludes that, based on the whole record, (Hamilton County Department of Education)s proposed education programs for Zachary were appropriate, Judge Edgar wrote in a 47-page memorandum handed down this week.
