DECATUR, Tenn. Former Meigs County Circuit Court Clerk Debbie Smith is recovering in Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga from a apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Decatur Police Chief Jackie Melton.

Chief Melton said police responded to a call from Mrs. Smith shortly before noon on Saturday and found her lying in bed in her home with a gunshot wound in her shoulder.

Chief Melton said Mrs. Smith was in stable condition at last report and could be released Thursday.

Mrs. Smith resigned her elected position late last month after she was indicted on three counts related to her job. The charges were dropped when she resigned, officials said.
