Immigrants march in Chattanooga to support reform

By Karina Gonzalez

Staff Writer

About 200 immigrants from Latin America marched today along Market Street waving American, Mexican, Guatemalan and Salvadoran flags and carrying picket signs in support of immigration reform.

Organizers said the group is speaking out against proposed state legislation that would deny driving certificates for immigrants and crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.

Azul-Christian Carabello, the main organizer for of demonstration, said immigrants in the Chattanooga area are in support of a guest worker program that would allow them to work toward permanent legal residence.

Similar demonstrations took place throughout the nation today, including in Atlanta, as part of the Day of Dignity for Immigrants.
