Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Doug Meyer today denied a request for a new trial for Isaac Eugene Jones, who was convicted of killing Chattanooga police officer Julie Jacks.
Judge Meyer ruled defense lawyers did discuss with Mr. Jones his right to testify at his trial last year.
However, defense lawyers said in court today they could not recall to what extent they advised Mr. Jones of his right to testify.
Mr. Jones said at a hearing March 31 that he would have testified if given the opportunity. Judge Meyer today said he did not believe him.
Prosecutors sought the death penalty for first-degree murder against Mr. Jones, but the jury found him guilty of second-degree murder.
Judge Meyer sentenced him on Aug. 25, 2005, to the maximum 25 years in prison.
