NASHVILLE A House subcommittee today effectively killed a bill requiring the training of some Tennessee Highway Patrol officers to enforce federal immigration laws.
Rep. Ben West, D-Nashville, and other Democrats argued the bill, aimed at illegal aliens, was not needed and could lead to racial and ethnic profiling by troopers.
But Rep. Dewayne Bunch, R-Cleveland, said it would give law enforcement a useful tool to help stem the tide of illegal immigrants.
Rep. West moved that the committee delay further consideration of the bill until the summer, when the legislature is not in session. He wanted to discuss it at an annual barbecue he holds for seniors in his district. Members approved the motion, intended to kill the bill, on a 5-4 vote. The Senate recently passed the bill.
