By Matt Anderson

Staff Writer

DALTON, Ga. Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus said failure is necessary for success. He spoke during a press conference before the Dalton-Whitfield Boy and Girls Clubs 14th Annual Steak & Stake fund raiser event here.

You never see anybody successful that didnt have some failures, Mr. Nicklaus said. I havent been afraid of failure in anything Ive done. Im just a guy who learned to play a game.

Mr. Nicklaus said hes proud to use his position as an international celebrity to benefit a group like the Boys and Girls Club.

If somebody wants to spend a lot of money to listen to me, thats pretty flattering, he said. To be able to use that status to do things that benefit kids, thats pretty neat.

About 600 people paid $165 per plate to attend the fund raiser event, according to Oliver Dorsey, area director for the Dalton-Whitfield Boys and Girls Club.
