Bear attack at Polk campground

Polk County dispatchers said a 2-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman were attacked by a bear at a campground on Chilhowee Mountain about 4:20 p.m. Thursday.

A search was under way for a 6-year-old girl, Dispatcher Gary Verner said.

Mr. Verner said Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and U.S. Forest Service officials were on the scene, assisting the sheriffs department.

About 50 to 60 people were assisting the countys rescue squad with the search for the little girl, he said.

Mr. Verner said the two victims were being airlifted to Erlanger Hospital for treatment.

The bear could not be found, he said.
