First Person: Dealing with complacency

Filed by Nikole Dugger

Complacency is rarely planned.

The byproduct of superiority and dominance begins as a a gradual dissension, resulting in the gradual removal of will, and only becoming apparent once epidemic status has been reached.

Having been the dominant world power for well over a generation now, it should not be all that surprising to find that America is not infallible. Unfortunately, while our public education system requires immediate assistance, reaction time is not meeting the demand.

Its easy to turn the other way after glancing at latest cover of Time magazine, which labels us Dropout Nation. After all, our daily routines arent all that affected by the shocking number of young Americans who fail to turn tassels and receive high school diplomas.

This isnt an us v. them situation, however. Certain demographics arent being painted into the corner, but the future of our land will most certainly be placed in ill-prepared hands one day.

The status as a world leader is not nearly as important as pulling our weight in the global community, and producing students who place dismally in math is simply not acceptable for the richest country on earth.

So, today I ask you to be sure to watch Oprahand to read this piece on Barry Bonds.

The former is set to address these issues, while the latter is merely entertaining.
