Mother and child suffered puncture wounds from bear attack

Doctors at Erlanger hospital today said the woman attacked by a black bear in Polk County Thursday evening suffered about eight puncture wounds to the neck.

The womans 2-year-old son has a significant puncture wound to the skull, doctors said.

The bear attack killed the womans 6-year-old daughter, officials said. The attack happened in the Chilhowee Mountain campground in the Cherokee National Forest at about 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, officials said.

Authorities still have not located the black bear believed to have attacked the family, officials said.
