Volunteer help group signs up Hamilton County schools

About half of Hamilton Countys 79 public schools have signed up for help from Serve Chattanooga, a nonprofit organization that links volunteers and donors to schools that need maintenance projects, tutors and other help, Serve Chattanooga officials said today .

Serve Chattanooga is a Chattanooga Resource Foundation initiative launched last month. The group piloted the program with Chattanooga Middle Museum Magnet School last year. One of the first projects was when volunteers painted the lockers on all three floors of the North Chattanooga school, Chattanooga Middle educator Julie Davidson said. The work had a significant impact on the students and teachers, she said.

More than improving the physical appearance, the big difference was the kids saw the community cared about them, Ms. Davidson said.
