A Walker County sheriffs deputy is seeking to run as a Democrat against incumbent GOP state Sen. Jeff Mullis, party officials said today.
Walker County Democratic Party Chairman Ed Helton said LaFayette resident Bruce Coker will seek to qualify next week to run for the 53rd District Senate seat, which represents Chattooga, Dade and Walker counties and part of Catoosa County.
Bruce is a man of the people, Mr. Helton said. We feel like Sen. Mullis has probably lost touch with whats going on.
Mr. Coker jumps into the race with an immediate financial disadvantage: Sen. Mullis, of Chickamauga, had more than $93,000 in campaign cash on hand at the beginning of the month, records showed.
