Small fire causes CSAS evacuation

Chattanooga Fire Department officials are investigating a small fire that broke out at the Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences this morning.

The fire started in the old gymnasium and was extinguished by the schools band director before firefighters arrived, said Bruce Garner, spokesman for the department.

He said no one was injured, but students were evacuated to the new gymnasium, which is a separate building, as a precaution.

The students, who were undergoing TCAP testing when the alarm sounded, were allowed back into the building around 11:30 a.m., Mr. Garner said.

Mr. Garner said the fire appears to be of suspicious origins and fire investigators are interviewing suspects.

Theyll be questioning a lot of people at the school, Mr. Garner said.
