KNOXVILLE —; In response to their commander’s order to uncase the colors, Command Sgt. Majs. James Pippin and James Kyle slowly unraveled a yellow battle flag here during a breezy Saturday afternoon before thousands of the state’s newest war veterans.
“Sir, the colors are uncased,” Sgt. Maj. Kyle said. “Proud to show them again.”
Those words during the ceremonial unfurling Saturday of the 278th Regimental Combat Team’s unit colors officially marked that the National Guard unit was back in Tennessee after a tour of duty in Iraq.
The nearly two-year journey that took the 4,000-member regiment to bases in Mississippi, California, Kuwait and Iraq is finally over, to the clear delight Saturday of thousands of family and friends who came here to celebrate.
