Multicultural Affairs Office luncheon marks fair housing observance

After operating for less than a month, the city’s Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted its first program today in honor of National Fair Housing Month.

Robert Bright, housing director with the Tennessee Human Rights Commission, spoke at the luncheon.

“We’ve only begun to touch the surface of discrimination in areas of disability,” he said. “A lot of people don’t know they have been violated.”

Mr. Bright was one of more than 80 people who attended the event in observance of the 38th annual national celebration of Fair Housing Month.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs hosted the event in partnership with the Chattanooga Association of Realtors Cultural Diversity Committee.

The information helps to “prevent owners from closing out property because of race or status,” said Jacqueline Strong Moss, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

She said she hopes that the 60 Realtors who attended the meeting may go back and share the information with property owners.
