Scales promotes solid local education program
By Beverly A. Carroll
Dr. Jim Scales addressed around 300 people at the downtown Rotary Club today in his first appearance since the Hamilton County Board of Education voted earlier this month to offer him the superintendent’s job.
My core mission is to make sure we put in place a good, solid program on top of a great foundation that’s already laid, Dr. Scales, the deputy superintendent at Dallas Independent School District, said. All children can learn if they are properly taught and have the right resources.
Dr. Scales takes the position July 1 after superintendent Dr. Jesse Register retires June 30.
The superintendent-elect listed discipline, building maintenance and principal development as some of his other priorities.
Board members approved by 8-1 a four-year contract that pays Dr. Scales a $194,000 plus benefits. Dr. Register will stay on as a consultant, receiving $150,000 without benefits, for the last year of his contract, which ends June 30, 2007.
