Local attorney Jeff Hollingsworth has begun his campaign to become a Hamilton County Circuit Court judge. He is seeking the post that will be vacated by the retirement of Judge Sam Payne.
“I have been trying cases for over 28 years and am fortunate to have enjoyed a successful career handling a variety of cases,” Mr. Hollings-worth said when he entered the race. “I am blessed to be in a position where I can offer my experience to serve as Circuit Court judge.”
Mr. Hollingsworth said he is among fewer than 2 percent of lawyers in Tennessee certified as a civil trial specialist and is the only candidate with such certification in this race. He said he has achieved the highest possible rating of “AV” from Martindale-Hubbell, a service in which attorneys are graded by their peers.
Former Circuit Court Judge William L. “Chink” Brown said he has known the candidate for more than 20 years.
“Jeff Hollingsworth is a man of the highest morals, integrity and skill, and I strongly endorse him,” Mr. Brown said.
After attending Tulane University on a football scholarship, Mr. Hollingsworth graduated from Louisiana State University School of Law in 1977. He served with the district attorney’s office in Baton Rouge, La., before he and his wife, Mary, a Chattanooga native, moved to Signal Mountain.
Mr. Hollingsworth worked as a prosecutor with the Hamilton County district attorney’s office from 1984 until 1989 when he entered private practice with what is today the law firm of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel.
Mr. Hollingsworth serves as an elder at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, where his wife serves as co-director of the church’s day school.
Mr. Hollingsworth is president-elect of the downtown Kiwanis Club, has served on the Inner City Ministries board since 1989 and is on the board of Goodwill Industries.
He also is active in the Legal Aid Society and serves on the Pro Bono Committee of the Chattanooga Bar Association.
Mr. Hollingsworth, running as a Republican, is unopposed in the May 2 primary election. He will face either Tom Crutchfield or Steven W. Grant, both Democrats, in the general election.
