Police estimate between 300 and 400 young men dressed in blue and red were involved in a series of fist fights near the Coolidge Park fountains Saturday night.
“It was possible gang activity,” said Officer Tetzel Tillery of the Chattanooga Police Department. “There were several fights, and a prom was canceled.”
A group of more than 250 who camped near the park’s bandstand and had permission to spend the night in Coolidge Park witnessed the melee from less than 100 yards away. The campers were participants in Global Night Commute, an international effort to raise awareness of civil war in Uganda.
Police dispersed the fighters without reports of serious injury or arrests, Officer Tillery said.
