Lady Vols rally past UCLA, 4-3

Tennessee rallied past top-ranked UCLA with a three-run sixth inning in the Women’s College World Series early this morning.

Baylor School graduate Katherine Card had one of the Lady Vols’ five hits that inning, and GPS alumna Lillian Hammond scored the go-ahead run.

Pitcher Monica Abbott nailed down the 4-3 win at 3:01 a.m. Eastern time, after striking out Pacific-10 player of the year Andrea Duran with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth and allowing two hits and a run in the seventh. Tennessee (59-10) gave up an unearned run in the first inning and trailed 2-0 going into the sixth, with only one hit.

But with one out in the sixth, India Chiles singled off the pitcher’s glove, Lindsay Schutzler reached first on a swinging bunt and Tonya Callahan ripped a single that scooted past the UCLA left fielder and allowed the tying runs to score. Hammond ran for Callahan at second, moved to third on Card’s chopper in front of the plate and scored on Kristi Durant’s single to right field. Durant singled in Chiles with the bases loaded in the seventh.

The game was scheduled to start at 9 p.m. EDT Thursday but did not get under way until nearly 12:30 a.m., after Northwestern edged Alabama 6-5 in 10 innings. Tennessee is scheduled to play Northwestern (48-13) at 9 tonight.
