Lady Vols win

Staff Report

OKLAHOMA CITY —; Freshman third baseman Jennifer Griffin belted a two-run home run in the ninth inning to lift the University of Tennessee over Arizona State 3-1 in an elimination game tonight in the Women’s College World Series.

Griffin’s blast easily cleared the centerfield fence to give the Lady Vols the lead, and Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott had all the insurance she would need.

Abbott (43-9) had eight strikeouts and gave up just three hits in the win.

Abbott went over the 1,700 strikeout mark for her career in the win. She recorded 26 strikeouts in the Lady Vols’ first two tournament games, including 15 in a 2-0 loss to Northwestern Friday night.

The fifth-ranked Lady Vols (60-11) play Arizona (51-10) Sunday and must win twice to advance to the championship round.
