Garden: Tennessee Valley Daylily society hosts show at Northgate

The 2006 Tennessee Valley Daylily society show will be held at Northgate Mall Sunday, June 11. Hours for the event are 1 to 5:30 p.m. and admission is free.

At noon a plant sale will be conducted, and members of the local society will be on hand to talk with visitors about how to grow daylilies.

In addition to the show, entitled “Daylilies: A Rainbow of Color,” several area gardens will be open to the public on June 12.

Lee Pickles, who has grown daylilies for years in his Hixson garden and sells them to gardeners across the country and even in Canada and Europe, said that he expects to see many new varieties of daylilies at the show and plans to exhibit some of his own flowers.

“You’ll see almost every type of daylily at the show,” he said. “Daylilies are really easy to take care of. They pretty much grow on their own and are pretty maintenance free.”

He said he is always asked what his favorite daylily is. “If I had a special color, it would be yellow. Yellow is so easy to see in the landscape,” he said.

He said that although daylilies don’t make good cut flowers since their bloom lasts only one day, “they’re fine to break off and put in a floating bowl. That’s what my wife, Jean does.”

For more information about the event, call Kirk Steely, show chairman, at 893-5206.
