Police say man committed suicide by jumping off bridge

A Chattanooga man intended to kill himself when he climbed to the top of the railing on the Walnut Street Bridge and fell about 50 feet to his death Sunday, police said today.

Ajay Mohan, 26, landed on the rocks that line the north shore of the Tennessee River and was pronounced dead at the scene today, said Det. James Holloway, a major crimes detective with the Chattanooga Police Department.

Eight witnesses told police they saw the man’s fatal fall but hundreds “would have seen a portion” of the incident that occurred just after the last Riverbend festival concert of the evening, the detective said.

The pedestrian bridge was reopened several hours after the 11 p.m. incident, said Sgt. Tom Layne, a spokesman for the Chattanooga Police Department.

City officials said they do not intend to add fencing or additional security on the bridge.
