David Brainerd Christian School has named former McCallie star Tawambi Settles as its new head football coach.

“The opportunity to build the program from the ground up is something that interested me,” Settles said.

“They’ve had a program for a couple of years, but nothing is established. The chance to work with kids at this level really intrigued me.

“Life circumstances brought me back home. I didn’t know where I would reside, but the opportunity presented itself here and I’m glad to be home.”

In its first year of playing a full varsity schedule last fall, David Brainerd went 0-10.

Settles lettered in four sports at McCallie and was a four-year letterman in football at Duke University, where he was twice named Atlantic Coast Conference academic all-conference. He signed with the Detroit Lions in 1998, beginning a seven-year career in professional football, first as a player and ending as a player personnel evaluator.

“We are happy to have secured someone with Tawambi’s experience for David Brainerd Christian School,” said headmaster Dr. Tom McCullough. “He has the prep school background, the degree from Duke and years of football experience at the highest level.”

David Brainerd recently won a decision from the TSSAA to move from Division II-A to Division I, which would put the football program competing in Region 3-1A, beginning with the 2007 school year.
