Ooltewah man announces school board candidacy

Ooltewah resident Kelvin Stamper announced last week he will run for the District 9 seat on the Hamilton County Board of Education in the Aug. 3 election.

As the father of two children in the Hamilton County school system, Mr. Stamper said he feels called to serve on the board.

“When I look at the makeup of the current school board, I see very few people with small children,” he said. “If parents in this community continue to let other people make decisions, we’re going to continue getting what we’re getting. It’s time for somebody to stand up and say, ‘Enough!’”

Mr. Stamper will challenge Chester Bankston for the board seat now held by Marty Puryear, who is not running again.

If elected, Mr. Stamper said, he will work to make the school board more financially accountable, promote school facility maintenance and encourage math and science education.

“This election is critically important to the future of this county,” Mr. Stamper said. “It’s important that citizens become informed about this issues and make intelligent decisions.”
