DALTON, Ga. —; Dalton may give traffic cameras another shot.
The cameras are designed to catch drivers who run red lights, but can also be used in insurance claims and in law enforcement, officials said.
The Public Safety Commission is sending out a request for proposals following Mayor Ray Elrod’s approval at a City Council work session this week.
The city has not committed to installing more cameras, and installation would require contract approval by the council.
Dalton tried a traffic camera last year at the Walnut Avenue and Glenwood Avenue intersection, the city’s most dangerous intersection for traffic accidents. The plug was pulled after four months, though, because of problems with the out-of-state company monitoring the camera.
Public Safety Commission Chairman Lane Ashworth said he’s open for suggestions on which intersections should get new cameras, but he was quick to point out that the now-defunct camera still has a residual effect on drivers.
“It literally dropped out of the top ten for accidents,” he said.
