DAYTON, Tenn. —; Rhea County Commissioners voted 7-2 Tuesday night to give a Spring City developer tax incentives as he begins building a 43-room Howard Johnson hotel.
Some commissioners said something needed to be done to help spur development in Spring City, which has been losing businesses over the past several years.
“The town’s going to dry up and blow away if we don’t do anything,” Rhea County Commissioner Dennis Tumlin said.
Commissioner John Mincy, who voted against the incentive, said he didn’t think the county should give a tax incentive to a private business after raising county property taxes last year.
“It’s a tax break,” he said. “That’s all it is. It’s a $40,000-a-year tax break.”
George Thacker, the developer of the property, said work on the hotel would begin immediately.
