Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey is launching the Read 20 campaign in an effort to ensure that 95 percent of children here read at or above grade level by the end of third grade. He will announce the chief reading officer to lead the county-wide initiative this afternoon.
The Read 20 initiative is intended to complement the Hamilton County Schools’ strategic literacy plan, which has been in place for the last two years.
“If you want a stronger society, a stronger workforce, stronger citizens for voting, you need to have a literate community,” said Charlene Becker, the school system’s director of secondary instruction. “We’re doing all kinds of things to make everyone learn to read by third grade.”
Since the school system initiated its focus on literacy, its Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program test scores have risen, said Dr. Kirk Kelly, director of accountability and testing.
