NASHVILLE — Tennessee Republicans are criticizing Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Harold Ford Jr.’s characterization of his GOP opponents as the Three Stooges.
But Rep. Ford, D-Memphis, has so far not recanted his remarks.
If they want me to call them the Three Statesmen, they ought to act like it, the Memphis congressman said of the campaigns of former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker and former U.S. Reps. Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary.
Rep. Ford and the three Republicans are vying to succeed U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. The GOP candidates face a primary election Aug. 3.
Republican Party Chairman Bob Davis said in a statement this week he found nothing funny about Rep. Ford’s remarks and demanded an official apology. He attacked Rep. Ford’s atrocious voting record and reckless immature behavior, saying they should be red flags to Tennessee voters.
U.S. Rep. Ford last weekend called Mr. Bryant, Mr. Corker and Mr. Hilleary the Three Stooges. The slapstick comedy trio was known for on-screen antics where they often insulted and then attacked each other with eye pokes, face slaps and kicks to the shin.
