After one year as an assistant coach at the school, B.J. Armstrong has been named the new head football coach at Sequatchie County High School.
Armstrong, 24, takes over for Kevin Saunders, who resigned after two years. Armstrong was a special teams and line coach last year with the Indians and is a native of Athens, Ala., where his father is the head coach at Athens High.
Weve been through seven coaches in 25 years looking for somebody who knows the area and wants to stay here for a while, superintendant Johnny Cordell said. It was my call, and I know its a roll of the dice. I dont mind doing that, he was very impressive and a highly organized young coach who has a great plan.
Armstrong was chosen over a group of six finalists.
I wasnt concerned at all about his age, principal Tommy Layne said. I sat through the interviews and even though I stayed out of the decision-making, I feel confident hes the right choice. Just because there are older coaches doesnt mean theyre better.
