Im a habitual person. I crave routine, and once something becomes a fixture in my existence, its there to stay.
I dont change yogurt brands or driving routes. I spend the vast majority of life in pajamas, and I never miss Greys Anatomy or Gilmore Girls. Sunglasses are usually propped on my head, even on rainy days, and since 2001, Ive headed to Steel Magnolias in Johnson City, Tenn. each time my hair has gotten undesirable.
That changes today. And, I hate it.
During my tenure in Knoxville, I tried to branch out once. The resulting quasi-mullet was salvaged by Pat Woodward at my favorite movies namesake, and I swore to never stray again.
Logistics and a frazzled mane have caused me to break this vow, and Im a bit terrified.
I first walked through the salons door days before my 17-year-old self departed on a two-week tour of Italy and Greece. Hoping the short do would be low maintenance enough to not cave in the heat, I clutched a picture of Ashley Judd from the movie Someone Like You. Less than an hour later, something similar rested above my shoulders, and I just kept coming back.
In time, the length grew, and communication became unnecessary. Pat knew what to do.
Ive to wait until a return trip home for trim, but thats not going to happen.
Instead, Ill journey down to Gunbarrel Road for a new adventure and hope for the best.
If I end up looking like Julia Roberts at the end of Steel Magnolias, none of you will you know.
Youre just my cyber-buddies, and judging from the influx of feedback, youre largely non-existent.
