This years Ford Tour de Georgia cycling race will cross state borders for the first time in race history during the individual time trial stage on April 20, the third of six stages.
Race officials today unveiled the stages 24.8-mile route, which begins in Lee Circle in downtown Chickamauga, passes Rock City in Lookout Mountain, Ga., and follows Ochs Highway into St. Elmo. The stage finishes at the Tennessee River riverfront.
Unfortunately for the cyclists, it does take them up and down Lookout Mountain, race organizer Chris Aronhalt said.
The time trial will begin at 11 a.m. in Chickamauga, with the last rider expected to cross the finish line in Chattanooga around 2 p.m.
Festivities will be held at both the starting and finishing lines, including the Live Healthy Georgia Expo. A portion of proceeds from the event will benefit the Georgia Cancer Coalition and the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at Memorial Hospital.
The Tour de Georgia is in its fourth year and is the highest-rated North American cycling event as sanctioned by Union Cycliste Internationale. This years event will begin in Augusta, Ga., on April 18 and end in Alpharetta, Ga., on April 23.
Last years race was won by Tom Danielson of the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team, as nearly 800,000 spectators watched.
