Hamilton County commissioners appear poised to appoint Chattanooga State history professor Warren Mackey to replace William Cotton, according to comments from commissioners today.
Commissioners Richard Casavant, Lou Miller, Greg Beck, Bill Hullander and Curtis Adams all said they plan to vote for Dr. Mackey. Chairman Larry Henry said it appeared Dr. Mackey had the commissions support, but that as chairman he had the privilege of voting last and would wait until then to announce his vote.
It would take five votes to make the appointment.
Commissioner Fred Skillern declined to reveal his decision because he said he could still change his mind, and Commissioner Charlotte Vandergriff could not be reached for comment.
Mr. Cotton resigned last month after a jury found him guilty of extortion charges related to Operation Tennessee Waltz. Dr. Mackey sought the seat in 2002 and lost to William Cotton by 34 votes.
Hes a fine young man, and hell bring honor and integrity to the commission, Ms. Miller said.
