KNOXVILLE Bruce Pearl and Tennessee have agreed on a two-year contract extension that will pay the mens basketball coach $1.1 million for the 2006-07 season.
The deal, which runs through the 2011-12 season, will see Pearls compensation average $1.3 million per season. Pearl made $800,000 during his first season as coach, which saw the Volunteers go 21-6 in the regular season and win the SEC East championship.
Tennessee has shown me a tremendous commitment, Pearl said, and I hope I have done the same.
Should another school pursue Pearls services, the new deal raises his buyout from $500,000 to $1 million.
In his first year at Tennessee, Coach Pearl accomplished more than we could have hoped for, athletic director Mike Hamilton said in a statement. His energy and enthusiasm have brought new life to Tennessee basketball.
