William D. Huntsburger Jr. was called away sometime between 12 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 4, 2006. Bill was a loyal goldfish who appeared to enjoy the simple things..blowing bubbles, nose-diving toward his blue rocks and swimming by his American flag.
The day began like any other. Turning the corner into the kitchen, I started to greet Bill, but instead of finding him swimming around as I have every morning for the past four months, he was unresponsively lying at the top of his bowl.
Any fish owner knows such a moment will come eventually, but there’s no preparation for the feelings of failure and loss of appetite.
Perhaps Bill was bitter about having to swim in a margarita bowl while I changed his water, or maybe his father’s leaving proved too hard to bear.
Regardless, I’ll forever carry the regret of buying the large bottle of water conditioner.
Thanks for the memories, ole pal. I’ll miss the enthralling political discussions and watching Gilmores on Tuesdays.
