NASHVILLE —; Senators on Wednesday will consider a Republican lawmaker’s plan that would remove the CoverTN component from the governor’s Cover Tennessee bill. CoverTN would create a basic insurance plan for lower-income workers.
Gov. Phil Bredesen’s Cover Tennessee proposal moved through the House Finance Committee today.
Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, said senators question if the insurance plan for lower-income workers would work.
“Will we get people to sign up? I just didn’t want to jump out there and put the people of Tennessee’s tax dollars on the line,” Sen. Tracy said.
Finance Commissioner Dave Goetz said it would be a mistake to remove CoverTN from the overall Cover Tennessee plan.
“The pieces that they’re talking about cutting out are the ones that small businesses need the most,” Mr. Goetz said.
