I can write on the death penalty, abortion, Hillary Clinton, you name it, and I’m greeted with a collective sigh. But step on Kelly Clarkson’s toes and fingers start a-tappin’.
In a recent blog, I remarked (with great restraint, I thought) that Ms. Clarkson’s tune “Because of You” was the musical equivalent of a drive-by shooting, an unendurable shriek-fest. I’ve been amazed since by the unmitigated wrath, the utter apoplexy I’ve witnessed on the part of a few of her fans.
With names deleted to protect the annoyed, here are bits of some of the responses:
—; “I do think that the article is stupid and just a statement of your personal opinion,” wrote one gentleman. (I would argue that he’s half right.) He suggested I keep my “unjustified and childish opinion” to myself, which would be a neat trick since not keeping my opinions to myself is how I buy food.
—; “She’s a brilliant singer she has a brilliant personality and does a lot for her fans,” another argued. (I guess it’s one of those subtle kinds of brilliance.)
—; “Kelly Clarkson is 1000000 times better than you could ever be!!!!” yet another opined. (A follow-up by this correspondent included eight exclamation points. Unexplained in either note is why being a better singer than I am makes you the equivalent of Mahalia Jackson.)
—; A fellow from Newport News, Va., sent an e-mail titled, “Kelly Article” but no text in the message portion. I assume he was speechless with rage.
