An Ohio student who falsely told Athens, Tenn., police that he had been kidnapped was arraigned today in McMinn County General Sessions Court on a charge of filing a false police report.
Judge James Watson set a July 13 preliminary hearing for Hiroshi Hayashi, who disappeared from campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, on May 11. He walked into the Athens police station on Tuesday claiming he had been abducted from the campus and had escaped in Athens, but he later confessed that he made up the story.
Mr. Hayashi’s family said in court that they would seek a mental evaluation for the 21-year-old student. His bond was reduced from $10,000 to $2,500 after prosecutor Kathleen Mitchell said he was not considered to be a flight risk.
