Baylor will play for state title
Baylor’s Red Raiders lost 4-1 to Christian Brothers earlier today, but bounced back in their second game to beat the Purple Wave 8-3 in Division II baseball action.
Baylor will play the winner of the BGA-MUS game Friday for the state championship.
Christian Brothers beats Baylor
Baylor wasted a five-hit pitching performance by Michael Elliott and lost to Christian Brothers 4-1 this afternoon to force a second game in their four-team half of the Division II baseball eight-team bracket.
The winner will play at MTSU Friday for the championship.
Baylor softball wins
Claire Hufstetler’s three-run double highlighted a six-run sixth inning and Baylor defeated Davidson Academy 7-1 in a losers-bracket game in the Division II state high school softball tournament at Starplex No. 3 in Murfreesboro.
Baylor (25-12) advances to play St. Benedict in the night session at 6:30 p.m. Eastern.
GPS ((26-11) plays Father Ryan at approximately 8:30 in the winners-bracket final.
Ashley Lawrence doubled twice and drove in the Lady Red Raiders’ run in the fourth. That hit came after a double by Sam Everett, who went 2-for-4 and scored twice.
Winning pitcher Maddie Schmissrauter and Hufstetler combined on a three-hitter.
Soddy-Daisy, Ooltewah face off
District rivals Soddy-Daisy and Ooltewah are set to face each other again when the night session of the Class AAA high school softball state tournament resumes at 6:30 p.m. Eastern at Starplex No. 1 in Murfreesboro.
Nikki Waters threw a no-hitter and paced the Lady Trojans to a 7-0 win over Houston in one losers-bracket game today.
Kaitlin Neil’s sixth-inning double lifted the Lady Owls to a 2-0 victory over Collierville.
Soddy-Daisy (34-4) scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the second before a storm rolled through and delayed play. Waters returned and finished her outing with 11 strikeouts.
Winning pitcher Holly Thomas started the sixth for Ooltewah (28-15) with a single. After a sacrifice, Bri
Shoemake beat out an infield hit ahead of Neil’s drive to center.
Thomas had a four-hitter with six strikeouts.
Chattanooga had a banner day today in tennis at the Spring Fling.
In the Class A/AA boys championship, Eric Chastain, a junior at Chattanooga Christian, defeated USJ senior Will Magee 7-6 (7), 3-0, default.
In the Class A/AA girls singles championship, CCS sophomore Brittney McBryar defeated Knox Catholic junior Kassie Moore, 6-2, 6-0.
In the Division II girls championship, GPS sophomore Claire Bartlett defeated St. Agnes senior Ashley Murdock, 6-3, 6-1.
Baylor’s Bo Seal won the Divsion II boys singles championship with a hard fought 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6 (2) win over MUS’s William Lang.
The McCallie doubles team of Charlie Ramsay and Wes Nelson won the Division II boys doubles championship, beating MUS’s Will Carter and Michael Wills 6-4, 6-2.
