It’s amazing to me when I think about food in Chattanooga. I grew up in this town and remember when restaurants were few and far between. This may date me, but I can even remember being so excited when the first McDonalds opened in Chattanooga on Brainerd Road. What a day that was!
Now, rather than having other chains come to our soil, restaurants that begin their lives in Chattanooga are opening in other towns. Krystal, of course, is the granddaddy of them all. Then Big River Grille, whose flagship restaurant opened on Broad Street some 10 years ago, now has three locations —; one each in Chattanooga, Nashville and Lake Buena Vista, Fla. And another is scheduled to open at Hamilton Place in early September.
Now, there are two more Chattanooga-based eateries with expansion on their minds. Bluewater Grille, which opens its first restaurant on June 5, is already talking about new locations outside town, according to Jim Thomas, the chain’s vice president of operations for original concepts. And Clumpies Ice Cream Co. will open a second Chattanooga location in Hixson in the Target center this summer, as well as a new one in Birmingham’s Mountain Brook neighbohood.
Chattanooga appears to be a solid foundation for restaurant beginnings.
