The Hamilton County school district made enough progress last year to achieve good standing under federal law, officials announced today. Clifton Hills Elementary, Soddy-Daisy Middle and Red Bank High achieved good standing this year as well.
We are making a very positive impact on the students in Hamilton County, and that’s just tremendous, Hamilton County Schools Superintendent Jim Scales said.
Under the No Child Left Behind law, schools must make a certain amount of progress every year toward the goal of having 100 percent of students proficient in reading and math by the year 2014. Schools that do not make enough progress for two consecutive years are put on the state’s high priority list and face consequences that worsen each year they don’t make it.
Hamilton County’s two most troubled schools, Orchard Knob Elementary and East Lake Elementary, met state standards this year. They must meet them next year as well to be placed in good standing.
Ten schools did not meet state standards this year, and six are on the state’s high-priority list and could face worsening sanctions.
The ten schools that did not meet state standards this year are:Brainerd High
Brown Middle
Chattanooga Middle
East Side Elementary
Hixson Middle
Howard School for Academics and Technology
Lookout Valley Middle-High
Ooltewah High
Soddy-Daisy High
Tyner Academy.
