In a week-long poll that began Dec. 31, 2006, viewers of www.timesfreepress.com selected the U.S. senate race as the top story in 2006.
Stories on lawmakers going to jail took the second spot while stories on 911 calls that went unanswered came in as the third top story. Rounding out the top five were the death of a Medal of Honor recipient and the surge in youth and gang violence.
More than 80 percent of viewers voting in a poll of 2006’s top photo, which began Dec. 24, selected a photograph by Times Free Press staff photographer Kathleen Greeson that showed Tracey Freeman and her sons, Alexander Freeman, and Antoniea Summerow. Their story involved their reliance on TennCare and their continuing on that program although their prescription drugs had been limited each month.
Viewers voting in a poll of top sports photos for 2006 selected a photograph by staff photographer John Rawlston that was taken of Lookouts pitcher Homer Bailey on the mound at BellSouth Park. A photo by staff photographer Dan Henry of Vanderbilt football player Funtaine Hunter grabbing unsuccessfully for UT’s LaMarcus Coker came in second in the voting.
