Delta Queen

Filed by Jan Galletta

What had been planned as a Monday rally to protest the scheduled 2008 retirement of the Delta Queen riverboat morphed into a small political meet-and-greet at Ross’s Landing.

Many of those on hand for the event were either boarding passengers en route to Decatur, Ala., or work crews cleaning up after the weekend's Head of the Hooch rowing regatta.

Among the other attendees were sightseers such as Bridget Davis of Chattanooga who had merely wanted to view the vessel on its last Chattanooga trip.

But she used the occasion to exchange pleasantries with such lawmakers as U.S. Rep. Zack Wamp, R-Tenn., co-sponsor of a bill that would exempt the Delta Queen from the fire code that hints of grounding the 81-year-old steamboat.
