Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue recognized Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High as one of five high schools statewide to post increases on the college entrance exam.
Gov. Perdue and Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox arrived in a helicopter this morning to present the award the Governor's Cup.
The awards presentation also included a $2,000 cash bonus and T-shirts for the L-FO juniors and seniors.
Gov. Perdue developed the Governor's Cup award in 2003 as part of an overall effort to raise Georgia's SAT scores. Last year, Dade County High School won the honor.
Principal Jerry Ransom asked the students to recognize their teachers, earning a round of applause and whistles from the crowd.
"You are the reason we are one of the only schools in North Georgia to achieve adequate yearly (by meeting federal benchmarks) each year," Mr. Ransom said. "These people are the reason our ACT and SAT scores steadily improve to the point where we are among the top 10 in the state."
