Rev. William Bobo

Rev. William Bobo passed Monday, March 31, 2008, at a local hospital.

Sheila Brackett

Sheila Brackett, 55, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and an avid Bulldog fan.

Survivors include a special cousin, Faye Spears, of Chattanooga, extended family members of Rome, Ga., and the "girlfriend club".

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Oaknoll Cemetery, Rome, Ga. with her cousins, the Rev. Don Spears and the Rev. Gene Spears officiating.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary Cofer

Mary Ruth Cofer, 86, of Hixson, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at her home.

She was the widow of Fred J. Cofer who preceded her in death in 1998. They were always together for 58 years. She and her husband were co-owners of Knitco Sports Wear in Chattanooga, Cofer Realty and Star Knit Wear in Soddy-Daisy. She served as an active volunteer and member of the Hamilton County Nursing Home for 30 years, until her health began to fail in 1995. She served as president for the Nursing Home Auxiliary for a total of 17 years. She was a very dedicated Christian that gave God the praise for so many opportunities to help those around her, especially the elderly and forgotten.

She was also preceded in death by her precious son, Larry Cofer; parents, the Rev. and Mrs. W.J. and Georgia Heflin.

She is survived by her son, James A. "Jimmy" Cofer; daughter, Marie Chantal Cofer; brothers, Joe W. Heflin, of Chattanooga, Keith Heflin, of White, Ga.; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Cemetery with Dalton Roberts officiating.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 332 N. Lauderdale St., Memphis, TN 38105.

William Daniels Sr.

William Daniels Sr., 84, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, March 28, 2008 in a local hospital.

Graveside: today at 12:30 p.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Willie Paul officiating.

The body will lie in state today after noon at Taylor Funeral Home.

Irene Grant

Irene P. Grant, 91, of Chattanooga, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Grant was born in Bakewell, Tenn., to Lauren and Ollie Park. She was a member of East Ridge Presbyterian Church and was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, J. Clifford Grant; brother, Larry Park; and sister, Freda Park, both of Nashville.

She was preceded in death by her three sisters, Marie Park, Ruth Pierce, and Naomi Davis.

There will not be any visitation.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, at the Chapel of Devotion in Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hixson, with the Rev. J.R. Caines officiating.

Gladys Griffin

Gladys Ruth Griffin, 86, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 7, 2008, at 11:30 a.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Don Hawkins officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Gilbert Howard

Gilbert Howard, 85, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 31, 2008.

Gilbert was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and was a World War II veteran of the Army where he was award the Purple Heart. He retired from Combustion Engineering with 27 years of service. Gilbert was a member of Silverdale Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Brainerd Masonic Lodge 736 and the Sunnyside Order of the Eastern Star 359. Gilbert was a member of the Wrectangle Square Dancing Club.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy; and a son, Barry.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Ruby Howard; four children, Randall (Debbie) Howard, Charles T. (Sharon) Scott, Barbara Bates and Bobby (Tina) Scott; four grandchildren, Angie (Steven) Burkholder, Christopher Swinney, Daniel (Shelley) Swinney and Eddie (Tammy) Scott; three great-grandchildren, Brittany and Chelsea Scott, and Aidan Swinney; one sister, Rosetta Keaton; several nieces and nephews.

A Masonic Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be private for the family only.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Wynell Arnold Jackson, formerly of Chattanooga, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, after a brief illness in Amherst, NY.

Helen Jolley

Helen P. Jolley, 83, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, peacefully surrounded by her family.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safety in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and proclaiming "Wow, what a ride!!!"Adieu, Live Life -- It's Totally worth it -- Mom!

Mrs. Jolley was a retired nurse from Erlanger hospital and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph A. Jolley Sr.; and granddaughter, Vanessa Moore.

She is survived by her brother, Eugene Pongonis; sons, David Jolley, Joe Jolley Jr. and wife, Sandy, Paul Jolley and wife, Rhonda; daughter, Madeline Erwin; seven grandchildren, April Freel, Sarah Erwin, Jason Jolley, Rebecca Jolley, Jessica Jolley, Stephanie Armstrong and Jennifer Stevens; and six great-grandchildren.

Deborah Marlene Lewis, 56, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2008.

She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Lewis. She was a good friend and an avid animal lover.

Survivors include her Goddaughter, Tiffany Ireland; brother-in-law, Kenneth Lewis and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Lewis Payne; stepdaughter, Susan Lewis Jones; granddaughters, Hillary and Sara Jones; and special nephew, Michael Payne.

Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Burial will be at Smith Cemetery.

Eldon Lippert

Eldon Reed "Hank" Lippert, of Soddy-Daisy, and formerly of Wayne, Ohio, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 at his home.

Born Jan. 22, 1926, in Helena, Ohio to Lloyd and Edna "Doll" Lippert.

He retired from Ohio Lime Company in Woodville, Ohio, after 50 years of service. A Navy veteran, her served during WWII aboard U.S.S. LST 668 and was involved in six invasions. He also served in the Korean War. Mr. Lippert was a member of Soddy American Legion Post 107, Ohio LST Amphibians and United States LST Association.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter; a brother and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years Lois Ault Lippert; sons, David Lippert, of Bradner, Ohio, Les Lippert, Joel Lippert, of Freemont, Ohio, Michael Byers and Gary Byers, both of Ligonier, Ind.: daughter, Lisa Hyman, of Soddy-Daisy; sister, Ethel Wiseman, of Helena, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2008, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Stancil officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton County Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday and from noon until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home.

Esther Mason, 84 of East Ridge, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at her residence.

She was a retired seamstress with the McLaughlin Manufacturing Co. and a member of Eastlake Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell G. Mulkey; and son, James David Mulkey.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Gail Mulkey, Hixson; sister, Ann B. Johnson, Chattanooga; two granddaughters, Pamela Sue Mulkey and Jenny Giddens; and one great-granddaughter, Whitney Nicole Overturf; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas Scealf

Thomas Eugene Scealf, 62, died at Parkridge Medical Center on Sunday, March 30, 2008.

A lifetime resident of Chattanooga, Mr. Scealf was retired from Combustion Engineering.

He was also an avid musician and artist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady B. Scealf and Bertie Pauline Scealf; and two sisters, Agnes Pauline McCarroll and Flora Ruth Scealf.

He is survived by two sons, Eric (Lisa) Scealf and Darren Scealf; two granddaughters, Destiny and Evie Scealf; two sisters, Ruby Nichols and Bertha (Tony) Lowe all of Chattanooga. He also is survived by several nieces and nephews and special friends, James (Jody) Williams and Kim Sweeden.

Services will be held at noon Thursday in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Lowe and Rev. Tony Walliser officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery with Grady Jenkins, Jim Jenkins, Roy Lowe, Dennis Rhinehart, Rickey Morgan and Rickey Colston serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends today from 2-9 p.m. and on Thursday up to the hour of service at the funeral home.

Ruby Schum

Ruby Stegall Schum, 90, died Saturday, March 29, 2008, at her daughter's home in Arabi, Crisp County, Ga., following a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry S. Schum, D. Min. in 2004; and her daughter, Mary Schum Cosby, of Chattanooga, in 1996.

A consummate preacher's wife, businesswoman, housewife and mother, they enjoyed ministries in Asheville, Charlotte, and Swannanoa, N.C.; Johnson City, and Chattanooga, Highland, Ky.; Atlanta and Macon, Ga.

Schum was born in Charlotte, Mecklenberg County, N.C., to G.W. "Dick" Stegall and Ethel Stegall on 4/6/1917. She graduated from Oakhurst High School in 1934, and was bookkeeper for Stegall & Son Construction Co. During World War II, she worked in Washington, D.C., with the Treasury Department and attended college there. She also attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tenn. She worked at Ben Lippen Boys School in Asheville after her marriage, and during their years in Johnson City, she was office manager of National Book and National Sales Co. for Sam Moore. The company grew to become Nelson Publishers in Nashville. She was office manager for an orthopedic group in Asheville while they served at First Presbyterian Church in Swannanoa, N.C. In Chattanooga, she managed the child evangelism office for several years before they moved to Macon, Ga. She was the driving force behind Dr. Schum's Uncle Hank 30-year ministry on television, and assisted him in his ministry, and in planting 23 PCA Presbyterian churches in Georgia and Tennessee, which are self-supporting and thriving.

She is survived by her daughters Jane Schum, of Arabi, Ga., and Ruby Schum Craft, of Chattanooga; sons-in-law, Dr. F. Edward Craft and Gary Cosby, of Chattanooga; and two grandchildren, Isaac Craft, of Chattanooga, and Brian Henry Cosby and his wife, Ashley, of Moody, Ala.; and by one sister, Mrs. Mildred Garmon, of Tampa Fla.; and other members of the Stegall and the Schum families.

She is also survived by her spiritually adopted daughter, Jennie Wilson Salinas, a missionary serving in Zihuatanejo, Mexico.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 8451 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, with interment at Hamilton Memorial Gardens, The Garden of Prayer. The services will reflect her life of boundless energy, creativity, and soul-winning and in the Lord's work.

Ministers officiating will be Dr. J. Render Caines, Rev. Eric Mullinax, Dr. J.R. Faulkner, and Dr. F. Edward Craft with music by Todd Gaither.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 8451 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421. It was through Dr. and Mrs. Schum this church was begun. Flowers fade, but the Lord's work lasts for eternity. Donations may also be made to Christ Fellowship, 1176 N. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Addie Ruth Harris; sons, Carlos and Lowell Harris; daughter, Mary Ruth Harris Bice; grandsons, Jeff Harris, Greg Kerley; parents, John and Lou Mathis Harris; son-in-law, Richard Byrd and Edmond Kerley.

ETOWAH -- William "Bill" McAllister, 85, died Monday, March 31, 2008, at Etowah Health Care Center.

Patricia Sanderlin

DAYTON -- Patricia Arlyene Sanderlin, 69, died Monday, March 31, 2008.

She was a longtime resident of Dayton, Tenn., and a member of Graysville Seventh-day Adventist Church and a member of the Rhea Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by husband, John F. Sanderlin; parents, Harold E. and Lillian A. Woten; one brother, Earl Woten; one sister, Trudy Rees.

Survivors include two sons, John Sanderlin, of Germany, James Sanderlin, Dayton; two daughters, Trish Morgan and Michelle Sanders, both of Dayton; two sisters, Sharon Patten, of Spring City, Tenn., Carol Hawthorne, of Spring Lake, N.C. and Charles Woten, of Spring City, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Pastor David Wendt officiating.

Jere Wagner

WHITWELL -- Jere R. Wagner, 76, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at NHC in Dunlap.

He was retired from Wagner Freight Co. in Chattanooga and a member of Cartwright Baptist Church.

Survivors include his sister, Rosemary Wagner; brother, Jack (Barbara) Wagner, both of Whitwell; sister-in-law, Jean Wagner, of Chattanooga, several nieces and nephews.

CRANDALL -- Evelyn Dalton, 74, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

Martha Fields

CHICKAMAUGA -- Martha Lynne Brown Fields, 82, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

She was born Feb. 10, 1926, to the late Henry and Madge Brown in Walker County, Ga. She was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chattanooga. Mrs. Fields was a Home Economics teacher for Chattanooga Valley High School for more than 30 years, where her most popular class was Bachelor Cooking, and previously had the schools annual dedicated to her. She was involved in the membership and held offices with the Walker County Retired Teachers Association and the Home Demonstration Club and had been selected as a Walker County Teacher of the Year. She had attended West Georgia College, but graduated from the University of Georgia. She was also a member of the Tsikamagi Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry "Jack" Fields; and one sister, Virginia Brown Mentor.

She is survived by six brothers and sisters-in-law, T. Walter and Joan Brown, of Chickamauga, James H. Brown, M.D. and Carol Brown, of Rossville, William "Burton" and Virginia Brown, of Flintstone, Joseph E. and Betty Brown and Jeff Brown, all of Chickamauga and Robert "Bo" and Mary Minor Brown, of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.

Burial will follow in Chickamauga City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

RINGGOLD -- Joe Charles "Joey" Johnson Jr., 25, died on Monday, March 31, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a former member of Central Baptist Church Woodmore and he attended Concord Baptist Church. He was an avid cave explorer and hiker.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Terry Nelson Doyal.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Doyal Johnson, of Ringgold; daughter, Madeline Eve Doyal; two sons, Daniel Ian Johnson and Gage Nelson Doyal; father, Joe Charles Johnson Sr., of Ringgold; mother, Bernadine Waters, of Ringgold; brother, Christopher Holmes, of Ringgold; mother-in-law, Candi Jeanne Doyal, of Ringgold; grandparents, James and Martha Johnson, of Chattanooga; uncle and aunt, Tim and Cindy Johnson, of Collegedale; great-aunt, Doris Kittle, of Ringgold; and nieces.

Donald Snyder

CHICKAMAUGA -- Donald Ray Snyder, 73, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at a local hospital.

A resident of the North Georgia area for most of his life he was a native of Cleveland, Tenn. He was a former employee of Combustion Engineering where he worked for 32 years and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his father, D.R. Snyder and mother and stepfather, Wilson and Lois McWhorter Nunley.

He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Revels Snyder, of Chickamauga, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Tonya Snyder, of Chattanooga, and Phillip and Amy Snyder, of Chickamauga; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tracy Alton, of Ringgold, Ga.; sister, Delores Parmley, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held noon Friday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ken Trivett officiating.

Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

FLINTSTONE -- Margaret Irene Woods, 48, departed this life Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

She was born in Catoosa County, Georgia to the late Charles and Theodosia Petty Cain, and was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Wayne Woods; and brother, Wendall Cain.

Margaret was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her loving husband of 32 years, James Woods; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Corey Doyal, all of Flintstone; son, Charles Woods, of Rossville; brothers, Jerry and David Cain, both of Ringgold; grandchildren, Shannon, Breanna, Belinda, Evan; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008, in the chapel with Rev. Billy Fowler officiating.

Interment will follow in Peavine Cemetery.

ROCK SPRING -- Virginia Odie Turnipseed Young, 84, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008.

She was born March 4, 1924 in Chickamauga, Ga., to the late John and Mattie Turnipseed and has been a lifelong resident of the North Georgia area. She was a Jehovah's Witness and enjoyed playing the piano, water skiing, planting flowers and gardening, but most of all her passion in life was her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilmer Franklin Young; four brothers, J.B., Randolph, Frank and Cecil Turnipseed; and one sister, Ora Mae Turnipseed.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Maxine and Dwight Ashby, of Ringgold, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Jessie Lee and Lester Little of Phoenix, Ala.; three grandchildren and spouses, Janice and Chris Adkins, Len and DeeAnna Wallace and Kevin and Angel Wallace; seven great-grandchildren, Courtney, Meagan and Morgan Beard, Brittany Callahan and Lensey, Cody and Kaitlyn Wallace; two great-great-grandchildren, Emmalea Patty and Corey Callahan; and several nieces and nephews.

BRIDGEPORT -- Bertha Juanita Hookey Houchins, 80, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, in a local hospital.

The daughter of the late Joe W. and Zell Coburn Hookey, she retired from SunTrust bank after 25 years of service. A native of the South Pittsburg area, she was a member of South Pittsburg Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Hookey.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Matthews, of Scottsboro; son, Darrell (Beverly) Houchins, of Chattanooga; sister, Betty (Joe) Rogers, of Stevenson; brothers, J.R. Hookey, Jerre (Julia) Hookey, Kenneth Hookey and Bobby (Sally) Hookey, all of South Pittsburg; grandchildren, Shawn Houchins, of Chattanooga, Ryan Matthews, of Scottsboro and Keith Matthews, of Stevenson; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A member of the National Guard for over 20 years, he was an employee of Taylor's Machine Shop in Richard City, and had retired from Combustion Engineering after 30 years. He loved to fish and attended Snowford Church in Stevenson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. Skyles and Velma Nelson Skyles; brother, Billy Skyles; son, Paul Brian Skyles.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Blizard Skyles, of Bridgeport; daughter, Amy (Kenny) Frame, of South Pittsburg; three grandchildren, Katie, Trey and Tyler Frame; four sisters, Alice (Jimmy) Pemberton of Columbus, Ga., Mary Sue (Howard) Pemberton, of Athens, Tenn., Patsy (Jay) Hutchins, of Kimball, Tenn., and Brenda Skyles, of South Pittsburg; four brothers, Bill (Wanda) Skyles and James Skyles, both of South Pittsburg, J.L. (Darlene) Skyles, of Buchanon, Tenn., and Bobby (Carolyn) Skyles, of South Pittsburg; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Smith.

Survivors include his loving wife, Joann Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Julie Smith, of Chickamauga, Ga.; mother, Velma Smith of the Davis Community; sister, Charlotte Smith Hill, of Bryant, Ala.; brother, Gregory Kent Smith, of the Davis Community; two grandchildren, Chris and Matt Smith, of Chickamauga; nieces and nephews.
