Incorrect petition disqualifies James for state House race

by Michael Davis

Former Hamilton County Democratic Party Chairman Stuart James failed to qualify for the 29th state House District race by today’s deadline because he did not follow directions for petition signatures, an official said.

Charlotte Mullis-Morgan, chief deputy administrator of the Hamilton County Election Commission, said that Mr. James, a local attorney, turned in some of his petitions on photocopies of an original petition sheet. She said that, according to state law, photocopied petition sheets are not allowed. She said these directions explicitly are stated in red lettering on the petitions.

“If they needed extra copies, they should have come here and gotten an original,” she said.

Today at noon was the deadline for Aug. 7 races. Rep. JoAnne Favors, D-Chattanooga, and Republican Basil Marceaux Jr. qualified for the 29th District race.

I can't help but feel that there is more to this story than is being told.
