Sandi Ballard, 58, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, April 7, 2008, at her home.

Roy Barnes Jr.

Roy Barnes Jr., of East Ridge, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at his residence.

He retired as a truck driver from Container Corp. of America/Smurfitt-Stone after 36 and half years of service.

He was of the Church of God faith.

Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Barnes Sr. and Sarah Teeters Barnes and his stepmother, Jennie Walls Barnes.

Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years, Mary F. Barnes; two daughters, Catherine and Ronnie Suits, of Dunlap, Ruth and Rick Benton, of Harrison; two sons Carson and Beth Barnes, of Soddy-Daisy and James and Glenda Barnes, of East Ridge; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alva Johnson; four brothers, J.W. Barnes, Doc Barnes, Joe Barnes and Frank Barnes; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the South Crest Chapel with the Rev. Benny Mills and the Rev. Max Kessler officiating.

DayMonn Carson passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in Houston Texas.

He graduated from Ooltewah High School where he was a faithful member of the band.

He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Carson and grandfathers, Joseph Edwards and Frank Carson.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea Carson; a loving daughter, Kiara, of Chattanooga; mother, Darlene (Dr. Louis) Sidney, Houston; brother, Nile; grandmothers, Lula Edwards and Viola Carson.

Margaret Ann "Pargie" Claypool, 60, of Harrison, died Saturday, April 5, 2008.

John T. Dunn, 82, of Hixson, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

John retired after 40 years from Ross-Meehan Foundries. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge.

John is survived by his wife, Betty Bivens Dunn; two sons, John D. Dunn and Michael Dunn; daughter, Ginger Hamill; two stepchildren, Frances Beene and Tim Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Henry Groseclose officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Frances Louise Davis Eldridge, 98, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 6, 2008.

She was charter member of Birchwood Baptist Church.

Albert Frey

Albert O. Frey, 91, of Signal Mountain, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Alexian Healthcare Center.

He was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Newark, N.J. and graduated from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. During WWII, he was an Army Air Force pilot. He met Audrey Compton while training in Lafayette, La., and they were married in 1943. After the war, he was employed by Oneida Ltd. and Reed and Barton, Silversmiths. They had four children, raised mostly on St. Petersburg Beach, Fla. His hobbies were boating, skiing, fishing and golf. He and Audrey were enthusiastic travelers, visiting many countries worldwide and all fifty states. They moved to Alexian Village on Signal Mountain in 1999.

He was predeceased by their son, Robert in 2004; and by his sister, Mary Louise Ross.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; two daughters, Mary Madelin Frey, of Kerala, India and Elizabeth Anne Koether, of Boulder, Colo.; one son, Michael Joseph Frey, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Frederick and Caroline Koether, also of Boulder.

Funeral mass will be held 11:15 a.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Alexian Village Chapel with Father Joe Kuzhupil officiating.

Ruth Bizzell Hamilton, 76, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, at a local health care facility.

She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry A. and Ruth Hudson Bizzell.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Donnie R. Hamilton; daughter, Lynda R. Hamilton, of Cleveland; sons, Ray B. and Donnie J. Hamilton, of Chattanooga; grandson, Jeremy R. Roana Bass Hayes, 101, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, at her Alexian Village home on Signal Mountain.

Mrs. Hayes was born June 16, 1906 in Long Island, N.Y., and was a daughter of the late Fred and Stella Bass. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry H. Hayes.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Alton; son, Stephen (Billie) Hayes; devoted grandson, Troy (Melanie) Alton; and great-granddaughter, Sarah Alton (the light of Mrs. Hayes life), all of Chattanooga; nephews, Robert T. Bass, of Hot Springs, Ark., and George Q. Bass, of Vienna, Va.; and several grandnieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 630 Mississippi Ave., Signal Mountain, TN 37377.

Richard Keith, 88, of Chattanooga, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church and retired from Polysar, formerly known as GAF, with 40 plus years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Maggie Kirkland Keith; brother, Albert Keith; and sister, Jimmie Dotson.

Donald Lyon

Donald Lyon, 75, of Ooltewah, went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 7, 2008.

He was retired from Collegedale Case Work Inc. and a member of Ooltewah Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Merle and Ella Lyon; one son, John Douglas Lyon; three brothers, Adrid Dale Lyon, Earl Dean Lyon and James Lyon.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia "Dee Dee" Lyon, of Ooltewah; two daughters, June (Peter) Carter, of Rico, Calif., and Donna Lyon, of Telluride, Colo.; stepson, Steve (Debbie) Perez, Lake Eleanor, Calif.; two brothers, Buddy Lyon, of Brawley, Calif. and Charlie (May) Lyon, of Wheat, Mo.; three sisters, Doretha Williams, Margaret Beech, both of Chaton, Ala., and Norma (Ken ) Bell, of San Matio, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews along with special friends, Lee, Hilda, Kendall and Eric Murray survive.

Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. in Ooltewah Seventh-Day Adventist Church with Pastor Mike Pettingill officiating.

Interment will follow in Tyner Cemetery with Shorty Croft, Lee Murray, Ken Haynes, Marlin Walter, Ed Young and Cliff Carbitt serving as pallbearers and Tom Keaton as honorary pallbearer.

Julia McCalman

Julia Hunter Culbertson McCalman died on Friday, April 4, 2008, at the age of 98.

Born in Laurens County near Ware Shoals, S.C., Julia was the fourth of 12 children born to Lucille and Homer Culbertson. She attended public schools and worked in Ware Shoals where she met her husband, James Roscoe McCalman. They married in 1933 and remained married until Roscoe's death in 1970. After spending the first few years of their marriage in Alabama, the couple moved to Chattanooga and lived in the St. Elmo, White Oak and Red Bank communities. Having moved to Red Bank in 1950, Julia remained there until 2001 when she moved to Merritt Island, Fla., to live with her only son, J.R. "Pete" McCalman. Shortly after moving to Red Bank, Julia began working part-time at Lerch's Red Bank Cleaners, and she continued to work there for 20 years. Her customers often marveled at her memory for names and faces, and she enjoyed the opportunity to interact with many of the people in the Red Bank community. Julia was an active member of Red Bank Baptist Church and retained her membership there until her death. As a senior, she participated in all the activities of the Senior Adult Ministry and very much enjoyed the fellowship and opportunities it offered (including visiting every state in the Union except Alaska). Another pleasure for her was as a "Prime Time Singer" in the senior adult choir.

Julia is survived by her four children, LeNelle Boyd, of Atlanta, Pete McCalman, of Merritt Island, Fla., Jane Mitchell (married to Gene), of Adairsville, Ga., and Judye McCalman (married to Earl Morrogh), of Quincy, Fla. She had nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Katherine "Kat" Wheeler, of Saluda, S.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be at Coulter Chapel, Lane Funeral Home on Saturday, April 12 at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Before the service, the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Baird Jr.

SEWANEE -- Charles O'Connor Baird Jr., a longtime resident of Sewanee, died on Friday, April 4, 2008, in Chattanooga, at the age of 85 following a brief illness.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Fitzwater Baird; a son, Charles Bruce Baird and wife, Sandy; two daughters, Elizabeth Thoni and husband, Joe and Julia Denegre and husband, Stan; and eight grandchildren, Matt, Lauren and Erin Baird, Amelia and Stanhope Denegre and Will, Elizabeth and Baird Thoni.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at 2 p.m. at Otey Memorial Church in Sewanee, with burial following in the University Cemetery.

Mr. Baird was a professor of Forestry at the University of the South for 32 years during which time he helped develop the Natural Resources major, which has proven to be one of the strongest majors in the college. He also served in several administrative positions. A native of Knoxville, he graduated from Knoxville High School and the University of Tennessee. Subsequently, Mr. Baird earned master and doctoral degrees from Yale and Duke Universities, respectively. During World War II, Mr. Baird served as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Philippine Islands. He was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with bronze battle star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with bronze star, and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Baird played tennis in his eighties and was an avid outdoorsman. He was an Eagle Scout and strongly believed in the values it represented.

Robert Carty

SPRING CITY -- Robert E. Carty went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 4, 2008.

He was born July 9, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., to the late Russell and Grace Marlow Carty. He was a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit and served his country from 1951 until 1953 in the U.S. Army.

When Bob retired to Rhea County nearly 30 years ago, no one could have predicted the enormous impact he would make on this community. After years of climbing the corporate ladder at IBM as a project manager in product development, Bob and his wife developed a "you-pick-em" blueberry farm in Spring City, where Bob, a CPA, continued to offer his services to the community. Bob kept the books for local nonprofit organizations such as Spring City United Methodist Church, the local YMCA and Kiwanis Club. He was also a board member for Rhea Medical Center for 16 years.

He taught the New Generation Sunday School Class at Spring City United Methodist Church.

Bob was as humble as he was talented. He will be missed by his family, friends and community.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Joan Carty, of Spring City; three children, Doug (Coley), of Smyrna, Ga., Dan (Mary Beth), of Bozeman, Mont., and Cathie Lipka, of Annapolis, Md.; and one granddaughter, Kate Lipka, of Baltimore, Md.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 10, 2008, from 5 until 8 p.m. and Friday, April 11, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Spring City United Methodist Church.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. at Spring City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.

PIKEVILLE -- Alma Sue Cooley, 68, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

She was a member of Lee Station Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie "Bud" Cooley; parents, Sam Rainey Sr. and Stella Mae Rainey Bayless.

Ernest Culey

CLEVELAND -- Ernest Walter Culey, 79, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008, in a local hospital.

He was a member of Eastside Church of Christ. He loved his God, his family and woodworking. He was very active in World Bible School Missions sending Bible studies and materials to more than 1500 individuals in countries where the gospel is not readily available. He served as a Merchant Marine from September 1944 until he joined the Navy. Mr. Culey was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served from May 1950 to December 1971 and received the Rank CWO W2 (Chief Warrant Officer) in 1969. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War and received the Navy Commendation Medal. He was an engineer with Hartford Steam Boiler and was also employed with Traveler's Insurance before his retirement in 1984.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Benson Culey, of Ireland and later of New York and Elsie Komlosy Culey, of New York and his first wife, Bonnie Jean Kitchen Culey.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Maye Randolph Eberly Culey, of Cleveland; children, Erna (Eric) Fella, of McDonald, Vickie (Ken) Smith, of Cleveland, Karen (Ralph) Helton, of Farragut, Martha (Rob) Griffith, James Culey and Lydia (Al) Sandberg, all of Cleveland; nine grandchildren, Erin Fella, Evan Fella, Ryan Kertesz, Shawn Kertesz, Amelia Smith, Amy Helton, Allicia Helton, Vance Griffith and Jennifer Griffith; six great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Ruthie) Culey, of Deland, Fla.; special in-laws, Charles and Easter Frady, of Cleveland and Max and Wanda Pelley, of Charleston.

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- Charles Andrew "Drew" Gibson, 25, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Charles William Gibson Sr.; and uncle, P. W. Walker.

He is survived by his father, Chuck Gibson; mother and stepfather, Nancy and Keith Jones, of Chattanooga; brother, Brad Gibson; stepbrothers, Josh and Zach Jones; grandparents, Ruth Gibson and Robert and Rachel Woods; uncles, Dale Gibson and Bob Woods; aunts, Becky Adrion, Patty Faulkner, Grace Gibson and Rose Crouch; and several great-aunts, great-uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be today, April 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. CDT.

Interment will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

ROSSVILLE -- Rev. Jerry L. Morrow, 66, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008, at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. today, April 9, 2008, at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South, with the Rev. Raymond Clark officiating.

FORT PAYNE -- Mattie Lou Crye Jackson Hansard, 90, passed away Monday, April 7, 2008.

Survivors include sons, Dale and Gary Jackson; daughter, Sylvia House, all of Fort Payne.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. CDT today at Burt Funeral Home chapel, Fort Payne.

Hansel Johnson

FORT PAYNE -- Hansel Johnson, 75, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at her residence.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. CDT Friday, April 11, from W.T. Wilson Funeral Chapel.

Burial will follow in Mount View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. today and Thursday.

Elva Moore

HUNTSVILLE -- Elva Virginia Jones Moore passed away at Huntsville Hospital in the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 8, 2008.

Born on March 16, 1918, she had recently celebrated her 90th birthday with all of her extended family. Elva was a Registered Nurse (RN) until she retired to raise her family while her husband served in the military.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mansell and Bertha Jones, of Donora, Pa.; her brother, Mansell Jones Jr., of Cape May, N.J.; and her daughter, Michele Moore, of Huntsville.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Robert H. Moore Jr.; daughters, Beverly Goodwin and Lynne Rowe, of Huntsville, and Gail Smith and husband, Alan, of Chattanooga; son, Robert H. Moore III and wife, Cindy, of Huntsville; grandchildren, Tait Goodwin and wife, Tracy, Marta Goodwin, Kirsten Rowe, Torin Rowe, Cassie Moore; and great-granddaughter, Abby Goodwin.

Funeral services and burial will be at 1 p.m. EDT Friday at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family.
