Lady Mocs get win to take Elon series

One day after having their 14-game winning streak snapped, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team rediscovered their winning ways Sunday afternon with a 4-2 win over Elon in Southern Conference action.

With the win, the Lady Mocs claimed the series victory over the Phoenix two games to one and improved their record to 31-15 and 9-1 in SoCon play.

Freshman pitcher Kaitlin Holloway (7-1) continued her marathon weekend of work for the Lady Mocs, pitching three innings of scoreless relief for the win. Holloway finished the weekend with 141⁄3 innings pitched and two wins over the three games series.

“It’s kind of bittersweet, because I’m a relief pitcher,” Holloway said of her pitching this weekend. “If I go in, it means the starter wasn’t on (her) top game.

“I want the ball in my hand, but at the same time ... I don’t want (the starting pitchers) to have to come out.”

Junior right fielder Laci Upchurch opened the scoring for UTC in the bottom of the second with a solo home run, her fifth of the season. Ashlan Clarkson walked and scored on a triple by freshman Lyndsey Stiles, who stole home on a pick-off play to first to give the Lady Mocs a 3-0 lead. Stiles is 8-for-8 on steal attempts this season.

The Phoenix (17-18, 6-6) answered with two runs in the third, chasing UTC starter Michelle Fuzzard and bringing sophomore pitcher Brooke Loudermilk into the game. Loudermilk stranded two Elon runners to maintain a 3-2 UTC lead.

Elon had a chance to score in the fifth when Loudermilk gave up a leadoff walk to Elon’s Debbie Zeigler, bringing in Holloway as UTC’s third pitcher of the day. Elon’s Melanie Helterbran reached on an error by shortstop Tara Temby, giving the Phoenix two runners on base with no outs, but Holloway rallied with a pop foul out to first base and two strikeouts to end the threat.

In the top of the sixth, Stiles helped the Lady Mocs maintain the lead with her arm when Elon’s Rebecca Rijavec tried to score from second on a two-out single to center field. Stiles came up with the ball and threw a strike to catcher Katie Blevins, who easily tagged Rijavec out at the plate.

Stiles rounded out her day with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth, keeping the inning alive for Tembey’s RBI single scoring Brittany Eason. Stiles finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

“I’ve been struggling at the plate a lot, so my mentality was just to get it on the ground,” Stiles said of her two-out hit in the sixth. “They moved me in the back of the box ... I waited on it and hit it up the middle.”

UTC coach Frank Reed said he is pleae with the way the Lady Mocs bounced back after losing the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

“It’s important to come back and let them know (Saturday) is definitely not the way we play,” Reed said. “Elon’s a good team, ... but a sweep would have been nice.”

UTC will be back in action this weekend, when they travel to Furman for a three-game SoCon series.
